Algiers Deepens Sahel Ties, Secures Energy Corridor
Algeria initiated an unprecedented military re-engagement in the Sahel, deploying combat aircraft to Niamey, Niger, on August 30. This deployment, which included four Sukhoi-30 fighter-bombers alongside transport and tanker aircraft, publicly demonstrated Algeria's support for Niger's government following a failed counter-coup attempt. The move underscores a strategic shift in Algerian foreign policy, driven by both security and economic considerations, and clearly signals Algeria's reassertion as a geopolitical player in the region and across the continent.
This military action directly aligns with Algeria's commitment to securing the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP). The TSGP is a critical project designed to transport Nigerian gas northward through the Sahara to Algeria, and then on to Europe. Ensuring the stability of transit countries along Algeria's southern borders is paramount for the pipeline's construction and defense. The deployment of military assets emphasizes Algeria's resolve to protect this substantial investment and secure a vital energy corridor, especially given Europe's search for alternative gas suppliers.
Beyond military presence, Algeria has pursued a comprehensive diplomatic re-engagement across the Sahel. Following a period of diplomatic estrangement, Algeria re-established high-level ties with Mali. The Algerian Prime Minister met with his Malian counterpart to address economic and security issues, marking the first such encounter since 2016. These discussions, framed around fostering greater security, stability, development, and prosperity in the regional and continental space, illustrate Algeria's proactive approach to deepening agreements and partnerships within the Sahel.
Algeria's broader strategy also encompasses significant economic initiatives in Niger. These include investments in power generation, oil cooperation in the Kafra block, modernization of energy infrastructure, and the provision of aviation fuel and military helicopters.
