Algiers Firmly Opposes Military Intervention in Niger Crisis
Algeria has intensified its diplomatic efforts to address the crisis in Niger, dispatching senior envoys to promote a negotiated settlement. Lounès Magramane, the second-in-command of Algerian diplomacy, traveled to Niger, calling for negotiation to be prioritized. According to Nigerien national radio, he stated that military intervention would have disastrous consequences not only for Niger but for all countries in the region. During his visit, Mr. Magramane met with the military regime's appointed Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, alongside several government ministers, including the Minister of Defense Salifou Mody, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bakary Yaou Sangaré, and Minister of Justice Alio Daouda.
These efforts follow a diplomatic tour initiated by Algerian diplomacy chief Ahmed Attaf, who, on mandate from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, engaged in discussions across three ECOWAS countries: Nigeria, Benin, and Ghana. The purpose of these consultations was to address the Niger crisis and explore means to resolve it. Mr. Attaf expressed a desire for his visits to bolster international and regional momentum, encouraging collective adherence to a political and peaceful process for resolving the situation in Niger. President Tebboune previously declared on August 6 his categorical refusal of any external military intervention in Niger, describing it as a direct threat to Algeria and asserting that no solution could be achieved without Algeria's involvement.
Algeria, as Africa's largest nation, shares a nearly 1000-kilometer border with Niger. The country is already contiguous with Mali and Libya, both facing deep crises, and has explicitly refused to countenance the opening of a third front of instability on its borders. President Tebboune has highlighted that two countries, Mali and Burkina Faso, are prepared to support Niger, and he cautioned that a military operation in the region would ignite the entire Sahel.
Consistent with its long history of mediation in international conflicts, Algerian diplomacy continues to advocate for peaceful means to address the Niger crisis. The current diplomatic initiatives underscore Algeria's commitment to regional stability and its preference for negotiation over military action to achieve a lasting political settlement.
