Diplomatic Strength: Algeria Ranked Among Africa’s Leaders by EUISS
The European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) has published a study, "Levers of Influence – Africa: Diplomatic Power," which identifies Algeria among Africa's foremost diplomatic powers. Released on September 17, 2026, the report positions Algeria as a country with a robust diplomatic presence and significant influence, drawing on indicators such as diplomatic reach, high-level political visits, formal partnerships, international summits, and voting patterns at the United Nations General Assembly. This recognition underscores Algeria's impactful role on the African continent and beyond.
The EUISS study highlights Algeria as one of only six African nations that host all 15 international actors examined in the report, including major global powers such as the European Union, China, the United States, and Russia. This concentration of diplomatic missions firmly establishes Algeria as a significant diplomatic crossroads, engaging with a diverse array of international powers competing for influence across Africa. Furthermore, the strategic importance of Algeria is reinforced by its geographical position, connecting North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Sahel, making it a pivotal diplomatic hub for external powers seeking engagement with the broader African sphere.
Evidence of Algeria's active diplomacy is demonstrated through notable diplomatic traffic, including seven high-level visits by Turkish officials, a visit by Spain's prime minister, and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's visit to Germany. Algeria has also maintained consistent diplomatic exchanges with Sahel countries, exemplified by a visit from Niger's president to Algiers and an anticipated visit from Mali's president. North Africa, with Algeria as a key player, accounted for 45.7 percent of all high-level visits recorded across the continent, further solidifying the region's central role in international diplomatic activity. The study's findings collectively illustrate the evolving nature of international engagement with Africa and emphasize Algeria's strategic importance within this expanding diplomatic landscape.
