Niger Visit Spurs Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Progress

Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Hydrocarbons, is currently on a two-day working visit to the Republic of Niger, a mission undertaken on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Accompanied by the CEO of Sonatrach, Nour Eddine Daoudi, and other senior executives from the sector, the delegation is focused on reviewing partnership projects, particularly the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP). This visit is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the positive momentum in Algerian-Nigerien relations, especially within the hydrocarbons sector, and to monitor the advancement of joint projects between the two nations.

Key discussions during the visit include the progress of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a strategic initiative designed to connect Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria. The Algerian portion of the pipeline commenced construction in June, and preparations and studies for the section traversing Nigerien territory remain a central focus, essential for strengthening regional energy integration and developing Africa's gas infrastructure. Additionally, the visit addresses the ongoing research and exploration project at the Kafra oil block, conducted by Sonatrach in partnership with Niger's national oil company, SONIDEP, where drilling operations recently began. The evaluation of new oil blocks in Niger, such as Bilma, with a potential production exceeding 20,000 barrels per day over two decades, is also on the agenda. Cooperation in refining and petrochemicals is being intensified, with a particular focus on monitoring major maintenance work at the Zinder refinery in Niger.

Furthermore, the visit explores the potential for Algerian territory to serve as a secure logistical corridor for Nigerien uranium, including the high-quality Dasa deposits. This consideration underscores Algeria's robust infrastructure and its capacity to provide secure transit routes for vital resources across the Sahara. The discussions reaffirm Algeria's commitment to reinforcing cooperation with Niger, solidifying partnerships based on expertise exchange and the optimal utilization of energy resources. Such initiatives are aimed at fostering African economic and energy integration and supporting the mutual development and economic growth of both countries and the broader region.
