Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Accelerated in Niger Talks
Minister Mohamed Arkab, Algeria's Minister of Hydrocarbons, undertook a working visit to the Republic of Niger on September 21-22, 2026, mandated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The visit aimed to accelerate the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) megaproject and deepen bilateral cooperation in hydrocarbons. Arkab, accompanied by an important delegation including Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi and other senior executives, engaged in discussions focusing on strategic energy initiatives, refining, and petrochemical partnerships.
A key objective of the visit was to evaluate the progress of the TSGP, a strategic $13 billion project involving Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria. Algeria commenced construction on its section of the pipeline in June 2026, demonstrating its commitment to the project. Discussions with Nigerien officials prioritized the ongoing preparations and technical studies for the segment traversing Nigerien territory, including the upcoming topographic survey campaign for the pipeline's route. This effort aims to synchronize advancements and ensure uniform technical specifications and safety protocols across the nations involved.
The TSGP positions Algeria as a central hub for African gas, leveraging its existing infrastructure, including the Hassi R'Mel gas field and trans-Mediterranean pipelines to Italy and Spain, as well as liquefaction complexes in Skikda and Arzew. This integration enhances Algeria's role beyond a mere exporter, establishing it as a regional pole for energy collection, processing, and redistribution. The cooperation also extends to refining and petrochemicals, with Sonatrach providing expertise for the major maintenance of the Zinder refinery in Niger, further affirming Algeria's commitment to continental economic and energy integration.
