Red Crescent, IOM Sign Migrant Support Memorandum in Algiers

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Algeria and the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Algiers on September 17, 2026. This agreement aims to extend migrants' access to essential healthcare services and psychosocial support. The IOM plans to leverage the Algerian Red Crescent's established national network to enhance the local delivery of aid and support services across the country, signifying a structured approach to migrant welfare.

Under the terms of the memorandum, cooperation will also focus on strengthening capacities within both organizations and supporting the voluntary return program for migrants. The Algerian Red Crescent has outlined additional objectives for this partnership, including fostering training initiatives, facilitating the exchange of expertise, ensuring better coordination of efforts, and achieving more effective interventions. This collaboration also represents a strategic move for the CRA to expand its engagement with international organizations, moving beyond previous ad hoc arrangements to embrace common programs for health, psychosocial assistance, and return preparation.

This recent memorandum complements a series of agreements established earlier in 2026, coinciding with the visit of IOM Director-General Amy Pope to Algeria. During her visit, Ms. Pope acknowledged Algeria as a principal partner in regional migration governance, recognizing its dual role as both a destination and transit country. The IOM previously assisted over 9,500 migrants in Algeria to return to their countries in 2025, underscoring the scale of existing humanitarian operations. The new comprehensive agreement with the Algerian Red Crescent further solidifies Algeria's commitment to humanitarian efforts and international cooperation in managing migration challenges effectively.
