Judicial System Gains 13 New Commercial Courts, Specialized Penal Poles
Algeria is significantly bolstering its judicial system and intensifying efforts against organized crime, particularly drug trafficking, according to Justice Minister Lotfi Boujemâa. The state is fully mobilized with its resources to confront these threats, with a commitment to applying the law with utmost strictness. This initiative aligns with the special attention President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is dedicating to amending the penal code and strengthening sentences for serious offenses.
As part of this comprehensive modernization, the judicial infrastructure will see the addition of 13 new specialized commercial courts, raising the total number nationwide to 25. Furthermore, plans are underway to increase the number of specialized penal poles to 10 across the country. These structural enhancements are designed to accelerate case processing, alleviate judicial burdens, and improve the overall efficiency of the justice system.
Combating drug trafficking remains a top priority due to its severe implications for citizen security, public health, and attempts to destabilize the nation with psychotropic substances and hard drugs. Minister Boujemâa affirmed that the judiciary will handle those implicated in such crimes with unwavering resolve, ensuring the application of legal provisions. The existing legal framework, which includes the death penalty, will be activated in cases where the law stipulates it, always within a complete judicial process that respects all guarantees and avenues of appeal.
Further strengthening judicial administration, the national electronic counter services for administrative justice bodies are being expanded to include administrative courts of appeal and the Council of State. This digital advancement enables litigants and lawyers to track case progress, view judgments, and obtain copies of administrative judicial decisions from any administrative court. The Minister underscored the importance of generalizing electronic litigation across all courts, highlighting the significant engagement of lawyers in the ministry's digital platform.
