UN General Assembly Hears Call for Palestinian State Protection
Algeria has called for tangible international action to prevent measures that could undermine the prospect of an interconnected and viable Palestinian state. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, articulated this demand during a meeting of Arab foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Algeria underscored the necessity for Arab nations to maintain a clear stance against the permanent establishment of projects that jeopardize the two-state solution.
The Algerian government affirmed that the Palestinian issue remains a central concern, emphasizing that developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in Al-Quds Al-Sharif and the West Bank, necessitate its return to the forefront of the international agenda. Minister Attaf stressed the importance of countering all attempts to marginalize, liquidate, or reduce the issue solely to its humanitarian dimension. He specifically highlighted the urgency of addressing issues such as the E1 file, indicating that ongoing developments on the ground require a faster response than current political actions.
Beyond the Palestinian question, Algeria also urged the condemnation of attacks on the sovereignty of Arab nations, citing instances in Syria and Lebanon. The country reiterated the importance of joint Arab action in addressing evolving regional challenges. Furthermore, Minister Attaf conveyed Algeria's position that Arab states must be integral to any discussions or negotiations concerning future security arrangements in the region, ensuring that their priorities and concerns are adequately considered.
Algeria maintained that continuous escalation in the Gulf region is a source of persistent concern, reaffirming its rejection of any aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states and any effort to transform the region into an arena for proxy conflicts. The nation also emphasized that while addressing current serious repercussions, other crises affecting Arab countries from Libya to Yemen and Somalia should not be overlooked. Algeria advocated for supporting national political solutions, preserving state institutions, safeguarding unity and sovereignty, and rejecting external interference in these crises, stating that the region requires practical steps and root-cause solutions rather than further promises.
