Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project Progresses with Niamey Discussions

Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, undertook a working visit to Niamey on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, conveying a message from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Niger's President, General Abdourahamane Tiani. Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeria's full availability to pursue and reinforce cooperation with Niger, emphasizing the strategic hydrocarbons sector within a framework of African solidarity, complementarity, and the realization of structuring projects. During his audience with President Tiani, Minister Arkab also received guidance concerning Niger's priorities in hydrocarbon resource valorization and capacity building.

A primary focus of these high-level discussions was the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, a significant initiative involving Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria. Concrete steps were addressed, including the continuation of preparatory procedures for launching a topographical survey of the pipeline's route within Nigerien territory and other necessary studies to advance this strategic project. The Algerian delegation, led by Minister Arkab, also met with Niger's Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, as part of the visit.

Beyond the TSGP, talks explored broader prospects for developing cooperation in exploration and production. This included Sonatrach's project in the Kafra perimeter and potential expansions to additional exploration blocks proposed by the Nigerien side. Furthermore, particular attention was given to the commercialization and valorization of Nigerien crude oil, with Algeria's Sonatrach group positioned to provide support in areas such as expertise, marketing, and negotiation.
