HPV Vaccine Joins National Calendar for Youth Cancer Prevention

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been integrated into Algeria's national vaccination calendar, commencing this academic year. This public health initiative targets adolescents aged 11 to 13, including both girls and boys, with deployment primarily within the middle school cycle. The introduction of the vaccine represents a significant advancement in preventive healthcare, aligning with a modern vision of public health focused on pre-empting diseases.

The primary objective of the HPV vaccination is to bolster the prevention of various cancers, most notably cervical cancer, which is strongly associated with the virus. Beyond this, high-risk HPV types are also implicated in other cancers, including those affecting the anus, penis, vulva, vagina, and oropharyngeal region. Administered early, before potential exposure to the virus, the vaccine is highly effective in preventing infections and pre-cancerous lesions linked to the targeted HPV types. The nonavalent vaccine, specifically, targets nine HPV types, comprising seven high-risk types associated with cancers and two types that primarily cause genital warts, serving as a crucial measure for long-term health protection.

The vaccination program prioritizes the safety and structured delivery of the vaccine within the school environment. School health teams are mandated to rigorously follow national technical instructions regarding the number and intervals of doses, ensuring every eligible student receives the vaccination under optimal safety conditions. The school setting facilitates organized vaccination sessions, ensuring equitable access to prevention and fostering collaboration among health professionals, the National Education sector, and families. Post-vaccination, students remain under observation by school health teams for 15 minutes, reflecting a comprehensive and secure collective approach to student well-being.
