Public Works Minister Drives National Connectivity Forward
Abdelkader Djellaoui, Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, has intensified efforts to advance projects in Algeria's southern and border wilayas. During a recent coordination meeting, Minister Djellaoui called for reduced realization timelines, the implementation of precise and controllable schedules, and increased mobilization across all involved parties. This strategic push aims to move beyond mere progress observation, focusing instead on tight deadline management to ensure the swift execution of crucial infrastructure developments that enhance territorial connectivity and support regional growth.
The acceleration mandate applies to both ongoing and future endeavors. For current projects, the Minister directed the reduction of completion periods and the adoption of clear schedules for regular oversight, emphasizing that any delays would necessitate immediate corrective measures. Concurrently, efforts are underway to fast-track preparatory studies for upcoming projects, thereby minimizing the time from conception to active realization. These measures are particularly significant for major structuring programs in the South, including railway and road projects designed to strengthen links between the northern and southern regions of the country. Notably, technical tests are anticipated in early October for a 127 km section of the Eastern mining line, connecting Annaba to key areas such as Souk Ahras and Tébessa.
Operational coordination and continuous field monitoring are central to the Minister's directives. Technical commissions from central structures are tasked with intensifying site visits and providing comprehensive support to companies from project launch through completion. This collaborative approach, reinforced by enhanced coordination with local authorities, seeks to promptly identify and address administrative, technical, or operational challenges, preventing them from causing prolonged delays. Minister Djellaoui underscored the strategic importance of these infrastructure projects in the South and border zones, affirming their role in fostering balanced national development and serving as vital levers for opening up isolated territories.
In a related development, Minister Djellaoui met with delegations from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). This meeting served as a platform to examine avenues for strengthening cooperation between Algeria and these financial institutions, specifically concerning investment and financing for major infrastructure projects. Discussions particularly focused on advancing developments within the railway sector, highlighting a collaborative approach to realizing Algeria’s extensive infrastructure ambitions.
