Education Sector Implements Early Retirement at 57 for Men, 52 for Women

Algeria's education sector has seen the official implementation of new voluntary early retirement options for eligible personnel, including teachers, establishment directors, and national education inspectors. Executive decree n° 26-74, signed on January 14, 2026, enables men to apply for retirement from the age of 57 and women from 52, representing a three-year reduction from the previous legal retirement ages. This measure, eagerly awaited by many, aims to provide greater flexibility for those serving in the national education system.

The initiative for this early retirement scheme originated from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who ordered the lowering of retirement ages for all education sector employees during a Council of Ministers meeting on February 9, 2025. Following this, the measure progressed through several legislative stages, including approval by the Council of Ministers, adoption by the National People's Assembly on June 16, 2025, and the modification of retirement law n° 83-12 by law n° 25-09 on July 19, 2025. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb then signed the executive decree, which was subsequently published in Official Journal n° 6.

Under the new provisions, eligible individuals must submit their retirement requests to their respective workplaces during the first three months of the academic year. The administration is unable to reject any application that meets the established conditions, reinforcing the voluntary and accessible nature of the program. While the standard pension calculation rules under Law 83-12 remain in effect, education personnel are also set to retain existing benefits, such as reduced rates on car and home insurance from public companies SAA, CAAR, and CAAT, even after their retirement.
