Bled El Hadba Phosphate Exports Set for 2027 Launch
Algeria is implementing a comprehensive economic transformation vision, with 2027 positioned as a pivotal year for strategic development. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has consistently reiterated this vision, which focuses on harnessing national resources in phosphates, iron, zinc, rail infrastructure, industrial expansion, and port capabilities to drive growth and diversification. This strategic shift aims to gradually lessen the economy's dependence on hydrocarbons and imports, transitioning major structural projects from planning and construction to active production, processing, and export phases.
A key initiative within this framework is the integrated phosphate project located in Bled El Hadba, Tébessa. President Tebboune has issued a directive for exports from this vital project to begin by March 2027. This ambitious undertaking establishes complete industrial chains, connecting the mining site to processing units at Oued Kebrit, Souk Ahras, for the production of phosphated fertilizers. Furthermore, a new 422-kilometer railway line will link these facilities to the port of Annaba, facilitating efficient transportation and export.
Beyond mineral development, the national strategy places significant emphasis on achieving food security. The development of a robust domestic fertilizer industry, utilizing Algeria's own phosphate resources, is central to securing essential agricultural input supplies and thereby enhancing national productivity. These interconnected initiatives, encompassing mines, railways, ports, industrial complexes, and agricultural infrastructure, are designed to transform natural resources into valuable industrial output, generate employment, build critical logistical capabilities, convert processed products into exports, and bolster national food resilience.
