Minister Meddahi Underscores AI for Algerian Tourism Modernization

Algeria's Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Houria Meddahi, recently emphasized that artificial intelligence and digitization are no longer merely supplementary tools but have become fundamental drivers in reshaping the global tourism landscape. She noted their capacity to foster more flexible and adaptive tourism models aligned with contemporary traveler expectations. This focus reflects a profound shift in the concept of sustainable tourism development, aligning with Algeria's celebration of World Tourism Day and the nation's consistent progress toward digital transformation, a core component of the President's vision for modernizing administrative, public, and economic facilities.

The Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts is committed to leveraging this transformation to accelerate the establishment of a modern, sustainable, and attractive tourism industry. Through its national tourism development strategy, the ministry underscores the importance of employing digitization and AI as essential instruments to keep pace with global sectoral changes, thereby improving the tourist experience and enhancing Algeria's appeal and competitive standing in both national and international tourism markets. Key areas of integration include enhancing the tourist journey through smart platforms for customized routes, guiding services, and streamlined booking and payment processes, alongside building an integrated digital environment to connect all tourism stakeholders, from hotel and resort managers to travel agencies and guides.

Furthermore, the ministry is dedicated to modernizing hotel and tourism services by upgrading administrative management within establishments, developing electronic payment mechanisms, and implementing comprehensive digital quality standards. Special attention is also being given to digitizing and valorizing traditional crafts, recognizing their integral role in Algeria's cultural identity and overall tourist experience. This initiative involves empowering artisans with digital tools, facilitating product marketing through e-commerce platforms, protecting traditional designs, and transforming craft products from mere souvenirs into holistic cultural experiences that support artisans and local development.
