Tourism Strategy Leverages AI for Global Promotion

Algeria is steadily working to establish a comprehensive and sustainable tourism industry. This effort leverages the nation's rich heritage and diverse geography, encompassing its Mediterranean coast, lush mountains, and the golden sands of the Sahara desert. This cultural and natural variety is now seen as a strategic economic driver, aimed at diversifying the national economy beyond hydrocarbons and attracting both domestic and international tourists. The state, investors, and local communities are collaborating to shape Algeria into a promising tourist destination. A core objective is to overcome seasonality and integrate various tourism types, such as connecting northern mountain and winter tourism with southern desert tourism. The Tourism Development Master Plan (SDAT) extending to 2030 emphasizes promotion and investment as foundational elements. The Ministry is addressing accommodation needs and improving hotel services by encouraging local and foreign private investment, including the allocation of Tourist Expansion Zones (ZETs) for new facilities, backed by significant legal, financial, and tax incentives for investors.

The sector is actively embracing technological advancements through digital and smart promotion. This includes launching modern marketing campaigns, utilizing digital platforms to showcase Algerian destinations globally, and engaging content creators to provide live portrayals of the nation's environmental and cultural diversity. The official tourism promotion portal, visitalgeria.dz, has been launched, and algeriatours.dz provides interactive maps and comprehensive visitor information. Further underscoring its commitment to innovation, the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts has initiated the “IA Tour Algérie 2026” competition. This program encourages innovative projects in artificial intelligence and modern technologies specifically designed to develop and promote Algerian tourism, aligning with the 2026 World Tourism Day theme focused on AI and digital transformation. Additionally, Algeria actively participates in international travel and tourism exhibitions, alongside hosting its own annual International Tourism and Travel Fair (SITAF), demonstrating a proactive approach to global engagement.

Beyond international outreach, domestic tourism holds a central role in the 2024-2030 comprehensive plan, focusing on enhancing reception quality, accommodation, and offering promotional deals to encourage Algerians to explore their own country. The new tourism direction is firmly rooted in sustainable development principles, enacting strict laws to protect natural reserves and historical sites, empowering local communities and artisans, and supporting eco-friendly tourism projects. To further boost international tourism, the sector is coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to streamline procedures. A “visa on arrival” system has been implemented for foreign tourists visiting the Algerian South through accredited travel agencies, which has significantly increased international interest in desert tourism.
