Ausserd (Sahrawi Refugee Camps) – On Sunday evening, the International Trade Union Forum for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People officially opened in the Ausserd refugee camp, marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the General Union of Workers of Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro. The event was attended by the President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Ibrahim Ghali, along with numerous labor unions from around the world.
The organizers reported that the forum brought together over 45 trade unions from 21 countries, represented by more than 150 international delegates, including the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) and the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU). Additionally, 250 Sahrawi delegates are participating in the event.
A Platform to Advocate for Sahrawi Independence
The three-day forum serves as a powerful platform to advocate for the Sahrawi cause and highlight international support for the people of Western Sahara in their struggle for independence.
Participants will engage in workshops and discussions that address various aspects of the Sahrawi labor experience. Topics will include the challenges faced by Sahrawi workers under occupation and in exile, as well as the role of Sahrawi women in the liberation movement and nation-building efforts.
