Algeria Calls for Action to Protect Women and Children in Gaza and Lebanon

New York (United Nations) – Algeria has called on the international community to take immediate action to protect the most vulnerable populations in Gaza and Lebanon, particularly women and children, amidst ongoing unprecedented Israeli aggression. The appeal was made during a UN Security Council session held on Thursday, where Algeria also reiterated its demand for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in both conflict zones.

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Benjamaa, expressed profound concern over the dire humanitarian situation. “Words cannot adequately describe the atrocities and daily horrors endured by Palestinians, especially women. We renew our call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon to ensure the protection of all civilians, especially the most vulnerable, in accordance with international law,” Benjamaa stated.

International Responsibility to Protect Women and Children

In his intervention during the UN Security Council debate on “Women, Peace, and Security,” Benjamaa stressed the need for global efforts to safeguard the lives of women and children affected by armed conflicts. He highlighted the severe impact of the ongoing Israeli assault on women in Gaza, with widespread violations of their basic rights.

“The aggression in Gaza has inflicted unimaginable suffering on women,” Benjamaa noted. “Of the 42,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza, 14,000 were children, and over 10,000 were women,” he added, condemning these atrocities as flagrant violations of international humanitarian law.

Promoting Accountability and Inclusion in Conflict Resolution

Benjamaa also emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for violating humanitarian norms and women’s rights in conflict areas. “The international community must take concrete measures to strengthen accountability and impose sanctions on actors who disregard international humanitarian law,” he urged.

The Algerian diplomat advocated for a collaborative approach involving the United Nations, regional organizations, and civil society to enhance women’s roles in peacebuilding and conflict resolution through partnerships and cooperation.

Gender Equality and Empowerment in Conflict Contexts

Benjamaa stressed the need to promote gender equality and develop comprehensive national programs aimed at empowering and protecting women, particularly in digital environments and during armed conflicts. These measures, he argued, would enable women to play a more active role in resolving conflicts and fostering peace.

Algeria’s Efforts to Promote Women’s Role in Peacebuilding

The ambassador concluded by highlighting Algeria’s ongoing efforts to empower women and support peace advocates at both the regional and international levels. He reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to promoting policies that enhance women’s roles in achieving lasting peace and security.
