vParis – The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has expressed deep concern over the suffering of the Lebanese people due to ongoing Israeli attacks. He urged all international actors to apply pressure for an immediate ceasefire and pursue a political resolution to the crisis.
Borrell’s remarks came in a press briefing on Thursday evening following the conclusion of the International Conference to Support the People and Sovereignty of Lebanon, held in Paris. His comments were also shared via the official website of the European External Action Service.
Support for Lebanon’s Sovereignty and Institutions
Borrell emphasized that the conference was not only focused on humanitarian aid but also aimed to explore comprehensive support for Lebanon to restore sovereignty and strengthen the country’s institutions. “This is about helping Lebanon reclaim full control and authority over its future,” Borrell said.
Mounting Civilian Casualties and Humanitarian Crisis
He criticized the disproportionate impact of the attacks, stating: “There is no balance between the scale of the attacks and the number of victims. So far, 2,400 civilians have been killed, and 1.2 million people have been displaced, including 400,000 children. The situation is overwhelming—this must end.”
Borrell stressed that Lebanon is facing extreme pressure and underscored the urgency of ending hostilities: “The country is under immense strain, and a ceasefire is essential for any meaningful solution.”
Seven-Point Plan for Resolving the Crisis
Borrell revealed that the conference identified seven key points that could contribute to resolving Lebanon’s crisis, with the ceasefire being the most critical. “Without a ceasefire, no other measure will succeed,” he emphasized. “Achieving this requires addressing impunity and holding those responsible for violations accountable.”
The European Union reiterated its commitment to working towards ending the conflict and ensuring accountability, emphasizing that international pressure is essential to stop the violence and prevent further humanitarian disaster.
