Algeria and Oman: Deep-Rooted Relations with a Strong Will to Enhance Bilateral Cooperation

Algiers, October 28, 2024 – Algeria and the Sultanate of Oman share deep-rooted relations, marked by the strong commitment of both nations’ leadership to breathe new life into their bilateral cooperation and establish a strategic partnership across various sectors.

These ties, characterized by alignment and harmony in their stances on Arab, regional, and international issues, are expected to strengthen further during the state visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Oman, starting on Monday. During his visit, President Tebboune will hold discussions with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, focusing on bilateral cooperation as well as key regional and global issues, with the Palestinian cause at the forefront.

This visit serves as a significant opportunity to solidify the bonds of brotherhood and historical friendship that unite the two nations. It also aims to elevate their relationship to new levels, expanding it to meet the aspirations of both Algerian and Omani people. Moreover, it offers a chance to identify new priority areas for cooperation in various sectors of mutual interest.

Among the topics expected to be discussed are joint opportunities in investment, energy, mining, food security, desert agriculture, and other sectors where joint projects could be established.

Both leaders are committed to continuous coordination and communication on all matters, especially those involving regional developments and international challenges. This reflects their tradition of political consultation and coordination at all levels, aimed at promoting the interests of both countries and the broader Arab and Islamic world.

In May, President Tebboune sent a personal letter to Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, extending his warm greetings and sincere wishes for continued progress and prosperity for Oman and its people. The letter was delivered by Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf. That same month, President Tebboune received Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, who conveyed a message from Sultan Haitham to the Algerian President.

Following his re-election for a second presidential term, President Tebboune received a congratulatory message from Sultan Haitham, in which the Omani leader expressed his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for the continued success, progress, and development of Algeria under Tebboune’s leadership. Sultan Haitham also expressed his hopes for further growth and prosperity in bilateral relations between the two nations.

In line with their high-level coordination and consultation, Algerian-Omani relations have recently witnessed significant momentum, reflected in reciprocal visits and communications between officials from various sectors and institutions. These interactions have provided an opportunity to comprehensively evaluate their cooperation and explore ways to enhance it in multiple fields.

Several meetings have also taken place between business representatives from both countries, involving both public and private sectors. These discussions have allowed the two sides to explore promising investment opportunities in a range of industries.

The 8th session of the Algerian-Omani Joint Committee, held last June in Algeria, reaffirmed the convergence of their perspectives in addressing various regional and international challenges.

In a statement to the Omani News Agency, Saif bin Nasser Al Badaei, the Omani ambassador to Algeria, emphasized the historical depth of the ties between the two countries. He highlighted the “high-level political coordination and shared visions, particularly regarding Arab issues and global peace.”

The ambassador described President Tebboune’s state visit to Oman as “historic,” noting that it aims to “strengthen bilateral relations and open new horizons for cooperation, guided by the shared vision and commitment of both nations’ leaders to elevate their partnership to greater heights.”
