Algeria’s Arqab Participates in Global Fusion Energy Group Meeting in Rome

Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arqab, participated today in the inaugural ministerial meeting of the Global Fusion Energy Group, held at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Energy Group Meeting in Rome. The event was attended by Algeria’s Ambassador to Italy, Mohamed Khalifi, Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Adjal, and Atomic Energy Commissioner Abdelhamid Mellah

According to a statement from the Ministry, this high-level meeting was organized under the auspices of Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, represented by Alfredo Mantovano, Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, along with Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The gathering offered a platform to establish a shared vision supporting the global development of nuclear fusion energy ,Energy Group Meeting.

In his address, Minister Arqab highlighted recent scientific advancements in nuclear fusion research, which have drawn significant global attention to this energy source. He emphasized that nuclear fusion, with its near-unlimited potential, could play a vital role in diversifying energy sources and mitigating environmental impacts ,Energy Group Meeting.

Arqab also affirmed Algeria’s commitment to sustainable energy transition and expressed Algeria’s interest in hosting a pilot nuclear fusion project. This initiative, he noted, reflects Algeria’s ambition to become a key player in developing this advanced technology and fostering partnerships to strengthen national capacities, particularly through advancing Algerian human resources in the field ,Energy Group Meeting.

He further explained that Algeria views fusion energy as a low-carbon source with immense potential to deliver modern, sustainable energy solutions for humanity. Arqab underscored Algeria’s dedication to diversifying its energy resources, with a focus on developing clean and renewable sources like hydrogen, which Algeria plans to expand in the coming years ,Energy Group Meeting.

The minister stressed the importance of bolstering international cooperation and partnerships to address the technical challenges posed by nuclear fusion technology. He pointed out that Africa, where energy access remains limited in certain areas, offers a promising opportunity for the application of these innovative energy solutions. Algeria fully supports the IAEA’s efforts to facilitate technical cooperation and international scientific exchange in this domain ,Energy Group Meeting.
