Algiers – Algeria’s Minister of Health, Mr. Abdelhak Saihi, issued a call on Friday in Algiers for a reinvigoration of scientific research across all healthcare facilities, aiming to “open new treatment pathways” for various health challenges and to stay abreast of ongoing advancements in the medical field.
During the inauguration of the Second National Conference of the Algerian Association for Respiratory Diseases, attended by the Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Mr. Fayçal Ben Taleb, and the President of the National Health Security Agency, Professor Kamal Sanhaji, Minister Saihi stated, “I urge specialists across all medical fields to reinvigorate research efforts within our healthcare institutions to address a multitude of health issues and keep pace with the developments in this domain.”
Minister Saihi further elaborated that his ministry places “great importance on scientific research activities and related events,” adding, “We emphasize the need for scientific research and support the creation of research units within various healthcare departments, in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.”
Highlighting the unique challenges faced by the healthcare sector, the minister noted that “rare diseases stand out as one of the foremost challenges,” revealing that “46% of the Central Pharmacy’s hospital budget is allocated for the treatment of these rare diseases.”
The conference saw the establishment of a youth group of Algerian doctors specializing in respiratory and chest diseases, along with the initiation of seven research projects focused on areas including asthma and tuberculosis.
The event also featured award presentations, including the late Dr. Pierre Chauli Memorial Prize, which was awarded to Professor Nadia Ait Khaled for her notable contributions to respiratory medicine, especially in tuberculosis prevention. Additional honors included the Djilali Larbaoui and Nacer Nahal awards.
According to the event organizers, this conference, which continues through Saturday, provides “an opportunity to explore significant advancements in respiratory health promotion in Algeria” and aims to “raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and strengthen prevention efforts to reduce the impact of respiratory diseases.”
