Tunisian Fencer Fares Ferjani Praises “Professional” Organization of Oran Stage at World Cup for Sabre Fencing

Oran, Algeria – Tunisian fencer Fares Ferjani, the silver medalist at the recent Paris Olympics, has lauded the high-level organization of the first stage of the 2024-2025 Sabre Fencing World Cup, currently held in Oran. Ferjani expressed appreciation for the “extremely professional” management of the event, commending the organizers for providing optimal conditions to ensure a successful tournament.

In remarks to Algeria’s APS agency during the individual finals held Saturday evening, Ferjani noted that “all conditions are met for the smooth progression of the competition.” He acknowledged the organizers’ commitment and expertise in delivering a world-class event, which he said contributes to a positive experience for the athletes.

Ferjani also praised the Meloud Hadefi multi-sport complex, where the event is hosted, describing it as a “world-class venue.” The Tunisian athlete expressed delight at his time in Oran, which he described as a “beautiful city.”

However, despite his accolades for the event’s organization, Ferjani, who secured silver at the Olympic Games in July, fell short of the expectations of his supporters after an early exit in the individual finals. Reflecting on his performance, the 27-year-old admitted, “I am truly dissatisfied with my performance. I didn’t expect to be eliminated in my first match. I am not at my best right now, but I promise to come back stronger in 2025.”

Looking toward the future of regional athletes, Ferjani underscored the potential of both Tunisian and Algerian fencers to make a mark on the international stage, citing his own success at the Paris Olympics as proof of what can be achieved. He emphasized the importance of athletes believing in their capabilities, maintaining rigorous training, and increasing participation in high-level training camps and competitions to improve their skills. However, he also highlighted the need for the necessary resources to be available to support this development.

The first stage of the Sabre Fencing World Cup concludes on Sunday evening with the team competitions, where both male and female Algerian teams are set to participate. The tournament, which began last Thursday, brings together 300 athletes from 37 countries.
