Launch of “Dar El-San’a”: A New Cultural Space for Arts and Traditional Crafts in Algiers

On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, the “Dar El-San’a” cultural space was officially inaugurated at the Arts and Culture Center of the Kasbah of Algiers (Fort 23). This new cultural venue is dedicated to promoting and preserving Algeria’s rich arts and traditional crafts, offering a platform to highlight the nation’s cultural heritage.

Located within “House 15” of the historic Fort 23 building, “Dar El-San’a” features several rooms, including a calligraphy hall, workshops for visual arts and crafts, and a library that displays works related to Algerian culture and heritage.

During a tour of the various spaces (douiras), Mrs. Faiza Riyash, Director of the Arts and Culture Center, emphasized that “Dar El-San’a” aims to enhance the preservation of Algerian heritage through arts and crafts, showcasing the authenticity of Algerian society. She further explained that this initiative aligns with the broader strategy to utilize the spaces of the Kasbah and provide the public with an opportunity to discover Algeria’s rich cultural heritage.

The entrance fee for adults is set at 200 DZD, while students can access the space for 100 DZD. Entry is free for those under 16 years old and over 60 years old.

Nabila Cherchali, Director of Cultural Heritage Preservation and Restoration, who attended the inauguration ceremony, praised the initiative, calling the new cultural space a “valuable addition to the social, heritage, and economic fabric.” She added that “Dar El-San’a” will also play a key role in the revitalization and appreciation of “old crafts” that are integral to Algerian heritage.

The Arts and Culture Center had previously inaugurated two other cultural spaces in October 2023, focusing on the book industry and engaging with the wider cultural scene, including a space dedicated to children.
