Algiers – Algeria’s Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouheir Bellou, is taking part in the 13th edition of the Mauritanian festival “Cities of Heritage,” scheduled from December 13 to 17 in the historic city of Chinguetti. The announcement came in a statement released by the Ministry of Culture.
The minister is accompanied by a delegation of experts specializing in earthen architecture and cultural parks, a move aimed at fostering cultural exchange between the two neighboring countries and reflecting the strong ties that have been reinforced by recent bilateral initiatives. These efforts include the historic visit of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Mauritania, during which he participated in a continental conference on education, youth, and employability.
About the Festival
The 13th “Cities of Heritage” Festival will take place in Chinguetti, a historic city in northwestern Mauritania, under the high patronage of Mauritania’s President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The event features a rich program of activities, including lectures, documentary screenings, book and manuscript exhibitions, traditional crafts displays, and competitions.
Goals of the Festival
Organized annually by the Mauritanian Ministry of Culture since 2011, the “Cities of Heritage” Festival aims to revitalize Mauritania’s ancient cities culturally and developmentally. The festival alternates between four historic cities, including Chinguetti, which were once important cultural and religious centers. These cities are also home to ancient palaces recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The festival serves as a platform for showcasing the unique heritage of Mauritania while fostering international collaboration in cultural preservation and sustainable development.
