Mining Projects Drive Algerian Economic Diversification

Algeria is implementing strategic mining investments, including the Gara Djebilet iron and steel project, the Integrated Phosphate Project, and the Zinc and Lead mine, to diversify its economy and significantly increase non-hydrocarbon exports.

Mining Projects Drive Algerian Economic Diversification

Algeria is advancing strategic transformations within its mining sector, embarking on a comprehensive development effort to enhance national wealth and build a robust economy. These initiatives aim to reduce reliance on hydrocarbons and external markets by fostering a shift from exporting raw materials to their local valorization, establishing an integrated industrial base centered on national resources.

Among the key undertakings are the Gara Djebilet iron and steel project in Tindouf province and the Integrated Phosphate Project in eastern Algeria, both entering decisive implementation phases. The Integrated Phosphate Project is specifically designed to position Algeria as a significant global exporter of fertilizers, with plans to increase annual phosphate production from 2.5 million tons to 10.5 million tons. Supporting infrastructure includes the inaugurated Bechar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet railway line. Presidential directives also call for the delivery of the Bled El Hadba-Oued Kebrit-Annaba port railway line and the completion of the phosphate pier, targeting phosphate exports by 2027. The official launch of the Integrated Phosphate Project works by the State Minister for Hydrocarbons occurred on September 23, with related strategic facility contracts signed on August 12.

Further reinforcing Algeria's mining ambitions is the Zinc and Lead mine project in Bejaia province, for which Prime Minister Seifi Ghrib officially launched exploitation and valorization works on March 17, 2026. This project is projected to extract at least 170,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of lead annually, ensuring national industrial self-sufficiency and generating a surplus for export. These collective mining investments are central to Algeria's strategy to support food security, create employment opportunities, diversify the national economy, and substantially increase non-hydrocarbon exports.
