Vital Interests Guide Niger Army Deployment Decision
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has confirmed the deployment of Algerian army units to Niger, underscoring this decision reflects a commitment to vital national interests and proactive regional stability.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed the deployment of Algerian army units to Niger, stating the decision reflects a commitment to Algeria's vital interests and a proactive stance. Speaking on Saturday in a message commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the Liberation Revolution, President Tebboune affirmed this step aligns with the nation's supreme interests.
The President elaborated that the deployment represents a determinant of Algeria's national security strategy, particularly in response to the current regional situation. This move, he added, is also consistent with the imperative to preserve stability, which the "New Algeria" invests its resources and capabilities in, guided by its sovereign political decision rooted in the spirit of November. The constitutional authorization and institutional consensus were established in cooperation with a neighboring and fraternal country.
The decision to send army units to Niger was initially made by President Tebboune last Monday, following parliamentary approval of a presidential request. The Algerian Parliament voted to authorize this military deployment during two separate closed sessions, one for each legislative chamber. Earlier this month, President Tebboune had indicated that Niger was facing a threat from an armed group, which he claimed was financed by a state outside the Sahel region.
