Global Film to Highlight Emir Abdelkader Legacy
A cinematic film project on Emir Abdelkader, supported by the Algerian state and overseen by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is progressing to showcase Algeria's national heritage and universal human values globally.

A significant cinematic film project focusing on Emir Abdelkader is currently in development, aiming to present Algeria's national memory and enduring human values to a worldwide audience. This ambitious cultural and strategic endeavor, which transcends classical biographical documentation, is receiving direct oversight and dedicated patronage from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The Algerian state seeks to establish a global dramatic format that articulates the modern Algerian state and its timeless human principles, with the potential to engage international festival platforms and promote dialogue between civilizations.
The public institution "Al-Jaza'iri" is charged with the film's production. Its General Manager, Salim Akkar, has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing with a renowned international director to lead this major work, with a final decision pending the complete finalization of the script. The scenario is currently undergoing its "final touches" and intensive revisions, expected to be completed before the end of the year, with filming proposed to commence before the close of 2027. A scientific committee, comprising prominent intellectual and academic figures such as researcher Jamal Yahyaoui and novelist Waciny Laredj, is meticulously reviewing the historical material to ensure scientific accuracy and prevent any technical or dramatic shortcomings.
The film's narrative will span three pivotal and interconnected stages of Emir Abdelkader's life: his period of resistance and the establishment of the state and organized army from his allegiance in 1832; his exile and captivity in Amboise, France, highlighting its political, diplomatic, and interfaith dialogue dimensions; and his humanitarian and spiritual zenith in Damascus. Notably, the film will depict his courageous and noble act of protecting Eastern Christians in 1860, an event that secured his international recognition in the history of international humanitarian law. Algeria intends to produce a cinematic epic of "Hollywood standards" by utilizing enchanting national filming locations and authentic architectural structures, including the Constantine Mosque, sites in Tlemcen, and Algiers. This project aims to serve as a living visual document, introducing the world to a remarkable leader who defended not only his nation's sovereignty but also human dignity and the enduring values of coexistence.
