The 15th edition of the Oran Local Festival of Music and Song commenced on Sunday in Oran, Algeria, featuring performances from 29 artists representing Oran and neighboring provinces.
In a speech delivered on behalf of Minister of Culture and Arts Zouheir Bellou by the Director of Culture for Oran, it was emphasized that such cultural events reflect the state’s commitment to fostering artistic creativity and nurturing young talents. “Music and Oran songs embody Algeria’s rich history, serving as a bridge for intergenerational dialogue and an expression of joy, nostalgia, and hope,” the minister stated.
Preserving Oran’s Musical Heritage
Festival Commissioner Souad Bouali highlighted the significance of preserving Algeria’s diverse musical traditions, particularly the Oran song genre, which has evolved from its Bedouin roots. Over the years, it transitioned from traditional instruments like the qasba and gellal to incorporating modern instruments such as violins, accordions, and flutes.
“The Oran song has always reflected Algeria’s cultural depth and history, blending ancient poetry with contemporary expressions,” Bouali remarked.
A Tribute to Icons of Oran Music
The opening night featured performances by prominent Oran artists and paid tribute to two legendary figures:
- Abdallah Ben Ahmed, a musician who collaborated with renowned artists Ahmed Wahby and Blaoui Houari.
- Bouzed El Haj, a specialist in traditional Bedouin songs.
The festival, which runs for five days under the theme “Our Heritage – Our Identity,” will include diverse nightly performances. Highlights include a solidarity night dedicated to the Palestinian cause and a women’s night featuring traditional Meddahat songs.
A Tradition Since 2008
Established in 2008, the Oran Music and Song Festival celebrates the region’s rich cultural heritage. It aims to unite artists and practitioners in safeguarding and advancing Oran’s unique musical legacy, pushing it towards new horizons.
