Algiers – Algeria has made significant progress in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to housing for 2030, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Housing, Urbanism, and the City.

During the second day of the 8th Arab Housing Conference held at the International Conference Center in Algiers (December 17-19) under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Mr. Abdelwahab Lobsir, Director of Architecture at the General Directorate of Urban Planning and Architecture, highlighted Algeria’s key initiatives. He stated that Algeria has undertaken major projects aimed at improving urban living conditions in line with the SDGs.

Mr. Lobsir emphasized Algeria’s significant advancements in connecting housing to essential utilities, including sewage systems, potable water, gas, and electricity. He noted that electricity and gas networks now extend to even the most remote areas of the country.

On the second day of the conference, Algeria actively participated in four workshops focused on sustainable urbanism, adequate housing, sustainable cities, and green buildings. The country showcased its experiences and studies in these fields to promote sustainable housing and urban development while keeping pace with technological advancements.

The conference featured presentations and research papers from technical experts and officials from Arab ministries of housing and urban planning. These contributions enabled valuable exchanges of experiences and expertise, and the recommendations from these workshops are expected to form the foundation for a collaborative Arab framework in sustainable housing and urban development.

Mrs. Leila Laaloui, Director of City Policy at the Ministry of Housing, Urbanism, and the City, emphasized Algeria’s efforts to create sustainable cities. She mentioned a study involving 38 cities to develop an action plan for local authorities to transition towards sustainability.

This study aims to produce a document that integrates SDGs at the urban level in Algeria. It includes 50 indicators for sustainable cities, covering aspects such as urban enhancement, green spaces, waste sorting, and the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

Strategic action plans will be developed for each city, with periodic assessments conducted up to 2030 to ensure continuous improvement in urban sustainability.

The second day of the Arab Housing Conference continued with workshops on four themes and presentations of research papers, including housing experiences in Saudi Arabia, architectural identity in Jordan, and housing models in Algeria.
