Rabat – Widespread calls have emerged demanding the release of Saïd Ait Mehdi, a human rights activist and head of the Al-Haouz Earthquake Victims Coordination. His detention by Moroccan authorities has drawn sharp criticism, seen as part of a broader campaign to silence dissent and target activists opposing the state’s policies.
Condemnations of Arbitrary Detention
Several civil and human rights organizations have expressed their “absolute solidarity” with Ait Mehdi, condemning his arrest as “arbitrary” and “an attack on fundamental freedoms.” Critics argue that his detention is linked to his advocacy for victims of the devastating Al-Haouz earthquake and their right to fair compensation and social justice.
The Civil Coalition for the Mountains expressed outrage at the “oppressive measure” targeting Ait Mehdi, who played a key role in highlighting the suffering of marginalized earthquake victims. The coalition stated, “Instead of addressing legitimate grievances, the authorities are punishing those who demand justice.”
Dubious Circumstances
Reports indicate that Ait Mehdi was summoned to appear before security services but was detained before the scheduled time, raising questions about the intent behind this move. Rights groups are calling for his “immediate release” and urging authorities to address systemic flaws in reconstruction efforts and ensure justice for affected communities.
Broad Solidarity
The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (Ait Ourir-Al-Haouz Branch) denounced the arrest, describing it as “retaliatory” and emphasizing Ait Mehdi’s prominent role in protests advocating for earthquake victims’ rights. They demanded an end to “unjust prosecutions” and urged authorities to focus on fulfilling reconstruction and compensation commitments instead of resorting to repressive measures.
The Adrar N’Dren Coordination for Al-Haouz Earthquake Victims also voiced solidarity, labeling the charges against Ait Mehdi as “spurious.” They called for an impartial investigation into his arrest and the irregularities surrounding relief distribution and reconstruction efforts.
Public Protests
Victims of the Al-Haouz earthquake held demonstrations in front of local authorities in the region, expressing support for Ait Mehdi and demanding an end to the marginalization of affected communities. Additional protests were held outside the Marrakech primary court, where activists decried his detention as an attempt to silence a leading voice for justice.
Protesters asserted, “Ait Mehdi speaks for us, exposing corruption and mismanagement while championing our rights.” They vowed to continue their activism until their demands for justice, transparency, and accountability are met.
