Gaza – A ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip officially came into effect on Sunday, following a delay of more than two and a half hours caused by Israeli authorities’ insistence on receiving a list of war prisoners slated for release, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The ceasefire was enacted at 9:15 AM GMT, after initial plans for it to begin at 6:30 AM GMT, as announced earlier in the week by Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Delays and Renewed Aggression
Despite the initial deadline for the ceasefire at 6:30 AM GMT, Israeli forces resumed airstrikes on several areas in the Gaza Strip. These attacks claimed the lives of 11 Palestinians and left dozens injured, highlighting the continued aggression faced by Gaza even in the lead-up to the ceasefire.
Background on the Ceasefire Agreement
The agreement, brokered by Qatar with international mediation, aims to halt weeks of devastating violence in Gaza. The delay in its implementation due to Israeli demands underscores the complexities of ceasefire negotiations in the region. While the deal marks a crucial step toward de-escalation, its delayed enforcement and the renewed attacks highlight the fragile nature of peace efforts.
