Tindouf-Zouérat Road: Rakhroukh Urges Companies to Support Worksites to Meet Deadlines

Algiers – The Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Lakhdar Rakhroukh, has called on companies overseeing the construction of the Tindouf-Zouérat road project to strengthen and support the worksites with the necessary material and human resources. This is essential to ensure the project’s completion within the set deadlines while adhering to the required quality and technical standards, according to a statement from the ministry.

This call was made during a meeting chaired by Rakhroukh on Thursday in Nouakchott, alongside the Mauritanian Minister of Equipment and Transport, Mr. Ahel Ould Veirik. The meeting marked the second session of the Algerian-Mauritanian Joint Committee tasked with overseeing the execution of the Tindouf-Zouérat road project.

In his address, Rakhroukh emphasized that the project is a key pillar in fostering regional development, serving as a foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania. He also highlighted that the project extends beyond road construction, aiming to boost collaboration in other critical sectors, including health, trade, vocational training, and media. Among the planned initiatives are:

  • A multi-service lung disease clinic in Zouérat
  • A vocational training center in Kiffa
  • A media center
  • A trade and marketing hub for Algerian products in Nouakchott

The minister further noted that the inauguration of the border crossings and free trade zone connected to the Tindouf-Zouérat road is not merely a physical achievement. Rather, it represents a strategic step toward a shared future between Algeria and Mauritania, aligned with the vision of both countries’ leaders to enhance economic and trade relations.

Progress and Future Plans

The second session of the joint committee follows up on the first session held in Algeria from December 11 to 16, 2022, during which a roadmap for the project’s study and implementation phases was established. After completing technical studies for the 840 km road, field visits were conducted from May 31 to June 7, 2023, to assess the agreed-upon route and coordinate with local authorities.

Subsequently, on February 22, 2024, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Mauritanian counterpart visited Tindouf to officially launch the project. The visit included the foundation stone laying for the free trade zone and the inauguration of the border crossings.

As of now, work on the first 320 km segment of the road is 20% complete, with steady progress being made to ensure timely delivery, the statement added.
