Drafting the Colonial Crimes Law: Former Lawmakers Appointed as Honorary Members of Special Committee

Algiers, March 26, 2025 – The People’s National Assembly announced today the appointment of former MPs, who previously initiated proposals related to the criminalization of colonialism, as honorary members of the special committee tasked with drafting the Colonial Crimes Law. This move is intended to draw on their experience and contributions to the national memory.

According to the official statement, this initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to preserve Algeria’s national memory and counter attempts to distort or erase historical truths. Following the formation of the special drafting committee, the Assembly invited former lawmakers who had previously advanced similar legislative proposals, acknowledging their historical engagement and honoring them by involving them in the current legislative process.

The statement emphasized that this step reflects the legislative body’s commitment to defending Algeria’s just historical causes, and advancing the demand for official recognition of colonial crimes endured by the Algerian people during French occupation. The law, once drafted and adopted, is expected to strengthen national sovereignty and shield future generations from historical amnesia.

Those present at the committee’s launch welcomed the move, describing it as a significant gesture toward deepening public awareness and advancing the process of revealing historical truth. They expressed optimism that this initiative would contribute meaningfully to the restoration of the Algerian people’s historical and moral rights, and reaffirmed their commitment to support the national effort aimed at preserving the legacy of those who struggled for Algeria’s independence.

This legislative effort comes at a crucial time, as Algeria continues to confront historical revisionism and demands full recognition and reparations for the colonial atrocities committed by France. The move reinforces Algeria’s unwavering stance in defending its history, honoring the sacrifices of its martyrs, and securing justice for its people.
