Algiers – The Algerian state-owned mining group Sonarem received a Chadian delegation from the Ministry of Mining to discuss opportunities for strengthening cooperation and building strategic partnerships, according to an official statement released by the group.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to outline the framework for collaboration, particularly in the exchange of scientific and technical expertise in geological research through the National Geological and Mining Research Office. The cooperation program also includes the development of updated geological and mining maps and the launch of a joint Algerian-Chadian roadmap. This roadmap envisions training programs, field visits to Algerian mining sites, and the transfer of Algerian expertise to Chad through reciprocal working missions.
The two parties confirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad’s efforts in drafting forward-looking studies and feasibility assessments to evaluate the economic potential of its mineral resources. They further highlighted the possibility of attracting Chadian capital to invest in Algeria’s mining sector, benefiting from the country’s national incentives and the comparative advantages of its mining products, supported by abundant energy, water, and infrastructure.
The visiting delegation was also presented with Sonarem’s extensive mining experience, which spans over 80 operating mines producing a wide range of resources such as gold, phosphates, zinc, lead, iron, and marble. Particular emphasis was placed on the group’s expertise in the transformation industry, especially its leading role in the marble sector.
Discussions also touched on the mining sector’s role in supporting the cement industry, an area where Algeria proposed potential cooperation with Chad to revive its existing cement plants. This reflects Algeria’s firm commitment to sharing its accumulated experience with African partners for mutual benefit.
The Chadian delegation expressed strong admiration for the performance of Sonarem’s subsidiaries, such as the National Company for Non-Ferrous and Useful Products (ENOF). They praised Algeria’s high-level expertise and its capacity to contribute to the advancement of Chad’s mining industry.
At the end of the visit, the Chadian delegation extended an official invitation to Sonarem to visit Chad in the near future in order to examine the country’s mining potential and carry out comprehensive evaluations to identify strengths and opportunities while proposing practical joint solutions.
Both parties agreed to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding and a Cooperation Agreement, while maintaining coordination through bilateral meetings and video conferences. This framework will help establish a precise action plan with clear deadlines, reflecting the determination of Algeria and Chad to safeguard Africa’s natural wealth within the continent and to channel it towards the sustainable development of their peoples.
