Algeria has taken a new step in consolidating its role as a reliable energy partner for Europe, as Sonatrach announced the delivery of its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Croatia. The delivery took place on May 22, 2024, at the floating regasification terminal in Krk, marking an important milestone in bilateral cooperation.
According to the company’s statement, the shipment was loaded from the GL3Z liquefaction complex in Bethioua and transported aboard the “El Waqarta” LNG carrier, which is owned by Sonatrach. This operation is the result of close collaboration with Croatian authorities since the launch of the terminal in 2021, aimed at creating the conditions necessary for such strategic energy exchanges.
Part of the regasified LNG will be transported through Croatia’s gas network to Hungary, making it the first time Sonatrach supplies both Croatia and Hungary with Algerian natural gas. This achievement not only diversifies Algeria’s export markets but also strengthens its strategic presence in Central and Eastern Europe, regions seeking secure and stable energy supplies amid global uncertainties.
By planning to ramp up exports to this region, Sonatrach is reinforcing Algeria’s central role in guaranteeing Europe’s energy security. At a time when some regimes attempt to manipulate energy flows for political blackmail, Algeria stands out as a dependable supplier that builds long-term partnerships based on mutual respect and sovereignty. This strategy highlights the difference between Algeria’s responsible energy diplomacy and Morocco’s fragile attempts to portray itself as a strategic hub while lacking the real capabilities to influence regional markets.
