Algeria is bracing for a day of intense weather as thunderstorms are expected to impact numerous provinces across the country. The National Meteorological Office has issued several weather alerts, warning residents to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential disruptions. The alerts, issued on October 18, 2025, detail the regions most likely to be affected and the expected duration of the severe weather.
Initially, a warning was issued for the provinces of Setif, Mila, Constantine, Guelma, Souk Ahras, Khenchela, Oum El Bouaghi, Batna, and Biskra. These areas were predicted to experience locally significant rainfall, exceeding 40mm, until 10:00 AM Saturday morning. Residents were advised to take necessary precautions, including avoiding unnecessary travel and securing outdoor belongings.
Later, the weather authority extended the thunderstorm warning to include the provinces of Tebessa, Djelfa, Laghouat, and Ouled Djellal. This alert remained in effect until 6:00 PM Saturday evening, indicating a prolonged period of potentially hazardous conditions. The meteorological office emphasized the possibility of localized flooding and urged residents to stay informed about the evolving weather situation.
Furthermore, a separate alert was issued for a cluster of provinces in the northern and central parts of Algeria. Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba, El Tarf, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Bouira, M’Sila, and El Menia were all anticipated to experience thunderstorms starting at 3:00 PM and continuing until midnight. This widespread area of concern highlights the extensive reach of the unstable weather system.
Finally, the provinces of Ouargla, Touggourt, El Oued, and El M’Ghair were also warned of continuing thunderstorms with locally significant rainfall reaching up to 30mm. This alert was valid until 3:00 PM Saturday afternoon. The consistent and widespread nature of these weather warnings suggests a significant weather event impacting a large portion of Algeria. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates, heed official advisories, and take necessary safety measures to mitigate the potential impact of these thunderstorms. This includes staying indoors where possible, avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding, and being cautious while driving in heavy rain. The weather service will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
