FAO Praises Algeria’s Agricultural Advancements & Food Security

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has commended Algeria for its significant strides in developing its agricultural sector. This recognition came during discussions held at the ongoing World Food Forum in Rome, according to a statement released by the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

During a meeting between Algerian Minister of Agriculture, Yassine Oualid, and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, the Director-General expressed the organization’s readiness to continue providing technical and institutional support to help Algeria achieve its development objectives. The discussions focused on deepening bilateral cooperation and developing joint programs aimed at achieving food security and sustainable agricultural development in Algeria.

The meeting also covered strategic approaches to modernize and develop the Algerian agricultural sector. Minister Oualid emphasized Algeria’s commitment to strengthening technology transfer programs and sharing technical expertise to improve agricultural productivity and promote modern, sustainable farming practices. Both parties highlighted the importance of developing innovative agricultural models suitable for arid and semi-arid regions. This would enable Algeria to become a leading regional hub for climate-smart desert agriculture. Achieving food security in these challenging environments is a major priority.

Minister Oualid outlined the government’s efforts to modernize agricultural storage and logistics systems and develop value chains. These efforts aim to reduce food waste and strengthen national food security. A significant portion of the discussions was dedicated to Algeria’s Green Dam project, which enjoys the support of the FAO and the Green Climate Fund. This ambitious project aims to combat desertification and land degradation.

Furthermore, the two parties discussed mechanisms to accelerate reforestation efforts and combat desertification and land degradation. This aligns with Algeria’s commitment to addressing climate challenges and restoring vegetation cover. The Minister of Agriculture expressed his appreciation for the FAO’s continued support to Algeria. He affirmed his country’s determination to further strengthen this strategic partnership for the benefit of food security and sustainable rural development.

Algeria’s active participation in the World Food Forum underscores its commitment to developing effective international partnerships to achieve sustainable agricultural transformation. The goal is to build a resilient food system capable of facing the challenges of climate change. The focus on sustainable agriculture and food security are central to Algeria’s long-term development plans. This partnership with the FAO is a crucial element in achieving these goals and promoting economic growth in rural communities.
