Non-Aligned Movement Reaffirms Support for Sahrawi Self-Determination

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has reiterated its unwavering support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. This reaffirmation came at the conclusion of the 19th Ministerial Meeting of the NAM, held in Kampala on October 15th and 16th.

In its final document, the NAM emphasized its continued support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to Western Sahara. These efforts aim to find a just and lasting political solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination. The movement underscored that all options available to the Sahrawi people remain legitimate and valid, as long as they are consistent with their free will and in accordance with the principles stipulated in the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Non-Aligned Movement, comprising 120 developing countries, has historically been a strong advocate for decolonization and the right of peoples to determine their own future. Its continued support for the Sahrawi cause is significant, particularly in the context of ongoing international discussions regarding the status of Western Sahara.

The Western Sahara dispute has been a long-standing issue, with the territory claimed by both Morocco and the Polisario Front, which represents the Sahrawi people. The United Nations has been actively involved in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict, and the NAM’s statement adds further weight to the calls for a solution that respects the Sahrawi people’s right to choose their own destiny.

The NAM’s declaration acknowledges the legitimacy of all options available to the Sahrawi people, providing they align with their freely expressed will and adhere to UN General Assembly resolutions. This statement is crucial because it reinforces the principle of self-determination as a fundamental human right and emphasizes the importance of respecting the wishes of the Sahrawi people in any future settlement. The enduring commitment of the Non-Aligned Movement to this principle provides vital support to the Sahrawi people in their pursuit of a lasting and equitable resolution to the Western Sahara conflict. The focus now shifts to the UN’s continued efforts in facilitating meaningful negotiations between all parties involved to achieve a peaceful and mutually acceptable outcome, ensuring the Sahrawi people can finally exercise their right to self-determination.
