Algiers, November 2, 2025 – El Aid Derdabou, winner of the prestigious ‘Stars of Science’ award in its 17th season, has announced the upcoming market launch of his groundbreaking invention: a smartwatch capable of measuring and monitoring Vitamin D levels. Derdabou emphasized that his victory underscores the potential of Algerian youth to transform innovative ideas into globally competitive realities through dedication and rigorous training.
Speaking after being honored by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamal Badari, Derdabou stated that his win “culminated from a long journey that began with a dream and evolved into a tangible achievement.” He further emphasized that his success is not merely a personal accomplishment but a testament to the quality of Algerian university education, demonstrating its capacity to cultivate talent capable of competing on an international scale.
The innovative project, which converts smartwatches into devices capable of measuring and monitoring Vitamin D levels, represents a technological breakthrough on a global scale, according to Derdabou. “This technology is the first of its kind in the world,” he stated.
Derdabou revealed that the prototype is fully functional and currently undergoing further development. The team is leveraging artificial intelligence to gather more data and minimize potential errors before the device is released to the public. He also highlighted his involvement in other research projects in the fields of nutrition and animal physiology, in collaboration with both Algerian and international companies.
Among these projects is an ambitious endeavor to develop an artificial pancreas, further demonstrating Derdabou’s commitment to advancing medical technology and improving healthcare outcomes. The Vitamin D monitoring smartwatch is expected to hit the market within the next year, promising to revolutionize personal health management.
