DZWatch Exclusive: Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic President and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, has asserted that the Polisario Front will not participate in any negotiations that fail to respect the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
Speaking at a meeting with Polisario Front and state officials on Saturday, President Ghali affirmed the Sahrawi side’s readiness for constructive cooperation with peaceful efforts towards resolving the Western Sahara issue. He emphasized, however, that “unilateral approaches will only exacerbate the conflict and endanger the region.”
Ghali highlighted the recent United Nations Security Council resolution, noting that it specifically mentioned the Sahrawi people, the Polisario Front, and the principle of self-determination. He stated that the Security Council reaffirmed previous resolutions on the Western Sahara conflict, upheld the principle of self-determination, and welcomed proposals from both parties aimed at achieving a just and lasting solution. The extension of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) further demonstrates the UN’s commitment to resolving the issue, he added.
The Sahrawi President stressed that the Sahrawi people and the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army are the decisive elements in resolving the conflict in Western Sahara. He called upon them to confront the schemes of the “Moroccan enemy,” which he claimed is resorting to these measures with the assistance of influential parties within the Security Council. He described this as Morocco’s last resort following normalization agreements, and urged the Sahrawi people to resist it.
Furthermore, Ghali dismissed the King of Morocco’s speech as “weak,” alleging that the Moroccan monarchy continues to mislead its people, as it did during the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion in 1975. He argued that Morocco is exporting its internal crises and attempting to mask them with UN resolutions that have consistently been unfavorable to them. According to Ghali, the King of Morocco’s speech was recorded before the Security Council resolution was issued, and it selectively cited a small portion of the resolution while ignoring the rest.
This is a developing story. DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they become available.
