Annaba Film Festival Retracts Egyptian Director’s Film Amidst Allegations

The Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival’s administration has expressed its deep regret regarding statements made by Egyptian director Marwa El Sharkawy on social media. The administration refutes her claims and accusations, which it says tarnish the image of Algeria and the festival, asserting that the circulated information does not reflect the reality of the situation.

In an official statement released today, the festival clarified that the official invitation extended to El Sharkawy clearly stated her participation in the fifth edition of the festival would commence on September 27, 2025, with her film scheduled for screening on September 28.

The statement alleges that the director unilaterally requested changes to her travel and accommodation dates without prior coordination with the festival’s management. Furthermore, she reportedly attempted to pressure Air Algerie staff to obtain a flight ticket using an open voucher without proper authorization, causing administrative complications unrelated to the festival.

The administration also stated that El Sharkawy did not contact the festival upon her arrival in Algeria, as is customary. Instead, she allegedly violated the agreement and proceeded to publish statements that the festival deems “baseless.”

In light of these events, the Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival has announced the complete and final withdrawal of Marwa El Sharkawy’s film from the current edition’s program.

The statement concludes by emphasizing that the Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival holds deep respect for all filmmakers and rejects any attempt to defame Algeria’s image or exploit the festival for non-artistic purposes. The festival remains committed to showcasing quality cinema and fostering positive cultural exchange. The decision was made after careful consideration of the director’s actions and their impact on the festival’s reputation. The administration hopes to move forward and focus on the remaining films and events of the festival.
