The Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation, Said Saayoud, today presided over a coordination meeting at the ministry headquarters with sector executives. The meeting was dedicated to reviewing priority areas related to the ministry’s work and monitoring the progress of various projects and plans.
At the start of the meeting, the Minister reviewed the President of the Republic’s directives regarding the amended traffic law project. He emphasized the need to include measures related to the penalty scale, the training system in driving schools, stricter control mechanisms for overloading heavy goods vehicles, medical and periodic examinations for drivers, and drug and psychotropic substance testing. Also discussed were the electronic collection of fines and the identification of vehicles and machinery prohibited from traveling on highways.
The Minister explained that these measures would enhance prevention and security on the roads and ensure traffic safety conditions.
The meeting also addressed the development of the land transport system for passengers, considering it a vital file that directly affects citizens’ daily lives. The Minister issued instructions to address imbalances in some transport lines, especially in the suburbs of the capital and new cities. He called for strengthening the coverage of these lines through public urban and suburban transport institutions, in addition to enhancing rail transport, while intensifying inspection operations to ensure compliance with schedules, cleanliness, and service conditions. He also stressed the follow-up of the import process of new buses to renew the national fleet according to the specified schedule.
Regarding ports, the Minister emphasized the need for rapid progress in the modernization workshops of ports and port services, adopting modern loading and unloading mechanisms, and forming partnerships with international operators to benefit from their expertise. He also emphasized intensifying cooperation with the ministries responsible for the environment, renewable energies, and scientific research to apply sustainable, environmentally friendly technologies.
The progress level in the Algiers airport modernization project was also reviewed, with the Minister calling for the completion of contractual procedures to begin the implementation phase.
During the meeting, the Minister followed a preliminary presentation of the results of surprise inspection committees that visited several provinces, which dealt with topics such as schooling, public hygiene, and prevention of the risks of weather fluctuations. He issued the necessary instructions to organize follow-up operations, with a subsequent meeting scheduled for a detailed study of the various committee reports.
