WHO Urges Protection of Hospitals Amid Sudan Conflict

The World Health Organization (WHO) has renewed its call for the protection of hospitals, medical personnel, and patients in Sudan, as the ongoing conflict continues to endanger healthcare facilities across the country.

In a statement released Sunday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted reports of a recent attack on the Al-Dalanj Hospital in South Kordofan state. The incident, which occurred last Thursday, resulted in the tragic deaths of six patients and their companions, including a 12-year-old child. An additional twelve people were injured in the attack.

The assault reportedly caused significant damage, including the destruction of the hospital’s radiology department.

The Director-General reiterated the WHO’s unwavering stance on the need to safeguard all healthcare facilities, patients, and medical staff. He emphasized the critical importance of ensuring access to medical care during times of conflict and urged all parties involved to respect international humanitarian law.

Furthermore, the WHO has called for an immediate ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities throughout Sudan. The organization believes that a peaceful resolution is the only way to prevent further loss of life and to protect the country’s already strained healthcare system.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a violent conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The fighting has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and has displaced millions more, creating a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions. The attacks on healthcare facilities further exacerbate this crisis, leaving countless individuals without access to essential medical services.

The WHO continues to work with local partners to provide emergency medical assistance and to support the rebuilding of damaged healthcare infrastructure. However, the organization stresses that lasting peace and security are essential for ensuring the long-term health and well-being of the Sudanese people.
