DZWatch Exclusive: A growing chorus of voices accuses Morocco of systematically exploiting the natural resources of Western Sahara for the past 50 years, effectively undermining the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and economic independence.
Allegations of resource exploitation, including phosphates and fisheries, have long been a point of contention in the disputed territory. Critics argue that these resources are being extracted without the consent or benefit of the Sahrawi people, who are considered by many in the international community to be the rightful owners.
“This economic exploitation is a form of modern colonialism,” stated a prominent Sahrawi activist during a recent interview. “Foreign companies that collaborate with Morocco in Western Sahara are complicit in financing and perpetuating the occupation.”
The activist further alleged that Morocco’s actions are designed to deplete the region’s resources, thereby preventing the establishment of a viable Sahrawi state. They criticized the international community for allegedly prioritizing economic interests over international law and the rights of the Sahrawi people.
“The international community’s silence on this matter only emboldens Morocco and perpetuates a culture of impunity,” they added.
The situation is further complicated by the involvement of foreign companies, which are accused of profiting from the exploitation of Western Sahara’s resources. These companies, operating in sectors such as phosphate mining and fishing, face increasing scrutiny and calls for divestment.
The ongoing dispute over Western Sahara’s resources highlights the complex interplay between economic interests, political aspirations, and international law. As the debate intensifies, the future of the region and its people remains uncertain.
