Algeria Reaffirms Decolonization Principles for Western Sahara at UN Committee Meeting in Managua

Algeria has renewed its commitment to the criteria ensuring a just and lasting settlement of the Western Sahara issue, reaffirming its consistent stance rooted in international legitimacy at the annual regional seminar of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24), held in Managua, Nicaragua from May 25–27.

Leading the Algerian delegation, Ambassador Tawfik Loudri told dzwatch that Western Sahara remains the last territory in Africa among the 17 territories on the C-24 agenda, stressing that all relevant UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions enshrine the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

Loudri firmly rejected Morocco’s false claims and misleading narratives, declaring that no fait accompli or deal-based arrangement can override UN legitimacy, and that the UN remains the sole authority to determine Western Sahara’s final status.

Algeria welcomed the resumption of direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front under UN and US auspices, participating as an observer neighboring state alongside Mauritania. Loudri emphasized this development has rendered Morocco’s unilateral recognition-seeking tactics obsolete.

Algeria reaffirmed its resolve to support all genuine efforts toward a peaceful, just solution guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination.
