Yasser Galal Stands Firm: ‘What I Said About Algeria is True’

Algiers – Egyptian actor Yasser Galal has reiterated his previous statements regarding Algeria’s support for Egypt, refusing to back down amidst criticism. Galal’s comments, made initially at the Oran International Arab Film Festival, sparked debate, but he insists his words reflect historical truth.

During the festival, Galal spoke of Algeria’s assistance to Egypt following the 1967 war, stating that Algeria dispatched a special forces unit to protect Egyptians amid fears of Israeli military action in Cairo. These remarks triggered a wave of criticism, with some Egyptians accusing him of exaggeration or diminishing the role of the Egyptian army.

However, Galal has stood his ground. In a recent statement, he reaffirmed his comments, citing his father’s personal account of Algeria’s support during that critical period. Galal explained that his father, who lived through the era, witnessed firsthand the Algerian assistance to Egypt in its darkest hours.

In a video posted online, Galal clarified that his statements about Algerian forces in Cairo were based on his father’s recollections. He emphasized that Algeria sent symbolic forces after the 1967 war to support Egypt against any potential threat. He also highlighted his father’s unwavering belief in Arab unity and solidarity.

The actor also expressed his deep respect and appreciation for the Egyptian Armed Forces, emphasizing his pride in having served within their ranks. However, he firmly rejected the notion of denying or ignoring Algeria’s role to appease those unwilling to acknowledge the truth.

‘No one can dispute Egypt’s role in assisting its Arab brothers, and the Egyptian role is well-known. The roles of our Arab brothers in supporting Egypt are also well-known,’ Galal stated, encapsulating his position. He believes acknowledging the contributions of others does not diminish one’s own nation’s value but reflects maturity and awareness.

Galal’s insistence on historical accuracy highlights the importance of recognizing shared histories and the bonds that unite Arab nations, even amidst differing perspectives.
