President Tebboune: Algeria a Model for Social Justice

Doha, Qatar – In a message delivered at the World Summit for Social Development in Doha, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune asserted Algeria’s unwavering commitment to social justice and sustainable development. The message, read on his behalf by the President of the Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, highlighted Algeria’s comprehensive national vision for inclusive growth.

President Tebboune conveyed his greetings to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, expressing his appreciation for Doha’s efforts in hosting the global event and wishing the summit success. He emphasized that Algeria’s participation reflects its desire to showcase its pioneering experience in social development, rooted in social justice, protection of vulnerable groups, and the promotion of inclusion, in line with the Copenhagen Declaration of 1995 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The President noted that the summit is taking place amidst a “delicate international situation,” requiring increased international cooperation to ensure human dignity. He pointed out that the Algerian constitution enshrines the principle of equality and guarantees the rights of vulnerable groups and people with special needs through effective institutions concerned with civil society, youth, and economic, social, and environmental rights.

President Tebboune highlighted Algeria’s bold social and economic reforms, including raising the national minimum wage and introducing unemployment benefits for young job seekers for the first time. He also mentioned the review of wages and pensions, the exemption of low incomes from taxes, and the expansion of the national solidarity grant to include vulnerable groups and people with disabilities. Elderly citizens now benefit from free healthcare and transportation, with a national day dedicated to honoring them every April 27th.

In the context of strengthening healthcare, President Tebboune emphasized that Algeria has expanded free health coverage to students, the unemployed, and those with chronic diseases, with social security covering treatment costs in the private sector. He also underscored the government’s efforts to bring development to marginalized areas.
