President Donald Trump has pledged his support for the success of Syria, emphasizing its importance to the broader Middle East. He expressed confidence in Syrian President Ahmed al-Share’s ability to lead the nation towards stability and prosperity.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with President al-Share’ at the White House on Monday, President Trump stated that he has a strong rapport with the Syrian leader, whom he considers a capable and effective figure. He added that he is confident in al-Share’s ability to successfully navigate the challenges facing Syria.
“Looking back at Syria over the years, it has been home to doctors, lawyers, and brilliant minds,” Trump said. “It’s a wonderful place with great people, and we want to see it succeed alongside the rest of the Middle East.” He also noted ongoing efforts to foster understanding between Syria and Israel.
The Syrian Presidency confirmed that the discussions covered bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them, as well as a range of regional and international issues. The foreign ministers of both countries were also present at the meeting.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani stated that President al-Share’ held constructive talks with President Trump following months of intensive preparations. The discussions comprehensively addressed the Syrian situation, with emphasis placed on supporting Syria’s unity, reconstruction, and the removal of obstacles hindering its future development.
The visit coincided with a gathering of Syrian Americans in front of the White House, who waved Syrian and American flags and held signs welcoming President al-Share’ and calling for the lifting of sanctions on Syria.
On the sidelines of the visit, Syrian Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa announced that Syria had signed a declaration of political cooperation with the international coalition against the Islamic State group.
The meeting marks a significant turning point in modern Syrian history. Al-Share’ (43 years old) assumed power late last year following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad and has since implemented sweeping domestic and foreign policy changes, re-engaging his country on the international stage.
