El Fasher, Sudan – A new wave of displacement is sweeping through El Fasher, western Sudan, as the United Nations reports that over 82,000 people have fled the city. The mass exodus unfolds amidst dire humanitarian conditions, with the Sudan Doctors’ Network decrying the situation as a “full-fledged humanitarian crime.”
The non-governmental medical network asserts that thousands of civilians are forcibly detained under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), enduring harsh conditions with a complete lack of essential resources. The network further highlights grave violations against women and girls, including reports of rape and physical assault, occurring in the absence of legal protection and humanitarian oversight.
Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has called for urgent international action to halt the “horrific atrocities” in El Fasher, cautioning against waiting until the situation escalates to “genocide.” He cited reports of mass killings, ethnic violence, and gang rapes, emphasizing that the siege preceding the city’s control was itself a “terrible crime.”
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported a significant funding shortfall for its 2025 humanitarian response plan in Sudan. The plan requires a total of $4.16 billion, but only 28.3% has been funded, leaving a funding gap of $2.98 billion.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), mourned the death of Dr. Adam Ibrahim Ismail, who was reportedly summarily executed by the RSF in El Fasher. In a post on X, Dr. Ghebreyesus stated, “WHO mourns Dr. Adam Ibrahim Ismail and demands an end to violence against healthcare workers.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned that approximately 30 million people in Sudan are in need of assistance. The number of displaced people from Darfur and Kordofan has risen to 57,000 in the city of Debba in the Northern State, including over 500 families from the city of Bara, who are being transferred to the main camp in Al-Affad, east of the city.
On the military front, a military source reported that a convoy belonging to the RSF targeted the town of Umm Barambita.
