Iran Open to US Deal, Rejects ‘Mixed Signals’

Tehran is reportedly willing to reach a peaceful nuclear agreement with the United States to resolve the long-standing conflict, according to Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh. However, Iran insists it will not compromise on its national security.

Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate on Tuesday, Khatibzadeh stated that Washington has been sending ‘mixed signals’ to Tehran regarding nuclear talks through other countries. He emphasized that discussions on the nuclear program have been stalled since the conflict initiated by Israel against Iran, with the involvement of the United States, in June. He further accused Washington of ‘betraying diplomacy’.

Prior to the 12-day conflict, the two sides had held five rounds of negotiations.

Last month, US President Donald Trump indicated that the United States was ready to strike a deal when Iran is prepared. He added that ‘the hand of friendship and cooperation is extended’.

However, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reportedly ruled out any negotiations with the United States last week while his country is under threat. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was also quoted on Sunday as saying that there is currently no possibility of resuming negotiations with the United States.

The Iranian government maintains that a fair and equitable agreement is achievable, but only if the United States demonstrates a consistent and trustworthy approach to diplomacy.
